Laura Bolich - Style Paragraphs

Joan Tomás is a Spanish photographer, who was born in 1958 in Barcelona where his photography is now based. Joan first became interested in photography at the early age of 11 and quickly began to process and print his own photos. He went on to graduate from Ealing College of Higher Education located in London in 1980. Joan went through many types of photography in his early career, such as photojournalism, fashion and advertising photography, and corporate photography. Now Joan specializes mainly in portrait photography and usually goes for a natural approach.  His photos are direct and many of them are used for social activism. Joan makes sure to keep his portraits on the simple side which helps to keep the person or subject in the picture the main focus. Even though some of his portraits are in black and white, he still does a great job at capturing the subject’s personality and emotions. The portraits that are in color have very clean, crisp and vibrant colors that also do a great job at drawing the viewer into the picture. All of Joan’s photos and the subject’s in his photos seem very easy-going and give the viewers a sense of calmness and realness.

Michael Reisch was born in Aachen, Germany in 1964. Michael currently resides in Dusseldorf, Germany. He went through his fair share of schooling in the arts and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht in 1985 in Maastricht, Netherlands. He also studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy from 1986-1991 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Michael is a visual artist working mostly with large scale landscapes which he then later processes from a digital camera. His works are very popular and are displayed in exhibits all over the world. Some of these exhibits are the Los Angelas County Museum of Art, USA, the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Photomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland just to name a few. Michael’s landscape photographs are very surreal, and he mostly photographs nature scenes. Michael makes these nature scenes look as if no human has ever been there before – untouched. His photos are the greenest or green and the bluest of blues. His images seem like they are almost too good to be true and sometimes do not look like they could even possibly be a real place. Michael makes it seem as if reality is frozen in time which allows the viewer a great sense of imagination.

Joel Sternfeld was born in 1944 in New York City, New York. He studied at and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in 1965. Joel first started out with taking street photography using small - and medium – format cameras and images. Not much later he started taking color photos using large – format cameras. This was he was able to capture very crisp and detailed photos as well as being able to capture more of the photos surroundings. Many of his images are of nature scenes that he comes across on his many travels around the world. Another set of his images in the book “American Prospects” which was released 1987 contains many human-altered landscapes. He took pictures of old barren towns, everyday houses and buildings and landscapes of unsuccessful towns and places. He wanted the viewer to feel the irony in these images. Joel also took portraits of people he met on his journey across the United States. Most of these photos were full-length portraits which helped Joel to take as detailed of pictures that he did. Joel also wanted these images to tell a visual story by using the person’s physical appearance and their detailed surroundings.
