Khadijah Brown Final Assignment
My final project is what I call a Black
Self Love Kit. I photographed Black features that Blacks are often insecure
about, taught to hate, or see appreciation of these features more when on
people of other races. Some may look at the project as an informative one to a
broad group, but it truly is meant for Blacks to be able to look at each
feature in appreciation. Sometimes seeing that someone felt that something was
worth capturing and displaying brings a positive perspective, or even better,
value to the subject. In the effort to romanticize said features, I
purposefully photographed close ups using a plain/subdued background as to not
distract the audience from the subject. If anything, the most challenging task,
as a more reserved woman, was getting comfortable with asking people to
participate in my project especially when it came to photographing the more
intimate features. I think that using natural lighting and eliminating as much
material distractions such as makeup or clothes worked because viewers might
miss attribute their appreciation to the additional features and that’s not the
point. If I could do it again, I would expand my subjects and participants to
get a greater variety. I love the way that the final set came out, clean, polished,
and uniform. I hope to extend the project outside of class, as I believe this
project will be significant and impactful in the black community.
